"Free Sample" grew from the ashes of Jack Easy, the soul/funk outfit I played bass in during 1977/8. Dave Haswell, Jack Easy's percussionist, moved onto drums, I returned to my other main instrument - keyboards, Harry Sullivan remained on guitar, and we added Iain McKinna on bass. We played original, instrumental material, in a jazz/funk style, influenced by artists such as Steve Khan, the Crusaders, and others of the genre. We gigged in various Edinburgh venues, including the University, Calton Studios, and the King James Hotel. The recordings here are from a gig at the Spider's Web, situated in the city's Morrison Street, sometime in 1979. They were recorded on an Akai reel-to-reel, and, over the decades since, have been transferred to cassette, then copied and enhanced using modern digital technology.
