about

The source of the lyrics to this haunting song is in some doubt (see Wikipedia article at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She_Moved_Through_the_Fair), and the melody may be either Scottish or Irish in origin. Over the years, the song has been recorded by numerous artistes including Marianne Faithfull, John Martyn, Sinéad O'Connor and Van Morrison - our interpretation is closest to the version by Simple Minds (under the title "Belfast Child") and harpist Alan Stivell.

As always, a live recording in Mags's house, with no multi-tracking or re-takes involved.

lyrics

She Moved Through The Fair

My love said to me, "My mother won't mind
And my father won't slight you for your lack of kind."
And she stepped away from me and this she did say
It will not be long, love, till our wedding day."

She stepped away from me and she moved through the fair
And fondly I watched her move here and move there
And she went her wayd homeward with one star awake
As the swans in the evening movds over the lake.

The people were saying, no two e'er were wed
But one has sorrow that never was said
And she smiled as she passed me with her goods and her gear
And that was the last that I saw of my dear.

I dreamed last night that my true love came in
So softly she entered, her feet made no din
She came close beside me and this she did say:
It will not be long 'til our wedding day.
